FINAL DAY - Saturday 26th June 2010
Welcome to Dundee!
Today was the final day of the Wildcubs trip and what a day it has been. Today the boys left from Perth at roughly 9am before heading to R&D Motorcycles where the guys looked around the bikes. They then headed onwards to the Horseshoe Cafe in Inchture where they were treated to a breakfast before joining up with approximately 40 Harley Davidsons. The guys then made their way to the Riverside Inn, where family and friends were gathered in force to welcome the highly missed boys back to normality. The guys rode in at the front with Duncan (Spence) leading, followed by the other boys. The guys were then followed by the Harley riders who had previously donated a whopping £200 for this amazing cause. As soon as the guys arrived we knew it was to be an emotional moment, there was a lot of tears shed. It was so emotional to see the guys riding in for the last few seconds of their journey. The local press were there to greet the boys for photographs. Once the boys were settled Patricia of the Brittle Bone society made a touching speech about the boys, the trip and the cause. Then Margaret Grant MBE (founder of the BBS) awarded each of the boys with a St. Christophers. The boys were photographed holding the cheque before they enjoyed the festivities set-up including bouncy castles, drinks and the company of their many supporters.
In total the boys raised in excess of £5,000, which is an amazing amount of money for the Brittle Bone Society.
Day 7 - Friday 25th June 2010
Today the boys travelled from Glencoe to Perth. The weather – for once – was nice and sunny, as opposed to the pretty wet weather they have had thus far. Today the boys travelled 86 miles and had a nice gentle run, tackling a big hill and meeting loads of nice folk along the way. They stopped off at the Greenwelly cafe for breakfast before continuing their gradually narrowing journey. The Wildcubs arrived earlier in Perth and are currently camping out in the Noah’s Ark campsite. The Wildcubs are all excited yet nervous about the final leg of the journey. They are scheduled to be meeting a group of Harley Davidsons at the Horseshoe cafe in Inchture just outside of Dundee for the last stretch of the journey and to ride in to Riverside Inn and celebrate their momentous achievement. The boys are looking to arrive at the Riverside Inn in between 12 and 12:30 pm tomorrow afternoon, so PLEASE come alone to support the guys.
Day 6 - Thursday 24th June 2010
The Wildcubs have arrived at Glencoe and are staying in the Red Squirrel Campsite. Today the boys went from Armadale to Glencoe, they boarded the ferry at 10.15 to Mallaig and had a good crossing. They travelled by Fort William and today covered approximately 90 miles. The weather was pretty wet, showery but it has dried up now so at least the boys will get a dry night tonight hopefully. The only thing they have to worry about is the couple of million midges currently invading their tent!! Tomorrow they are hoping to head through Glencoe and hopefully will end up in Crieff, but are generally looking to travel as far as possible to make the final leg on Saturday as easy as possible.
Day 5 - Wednesday 23rd June 2010
Today has been very, very, VERY wet, the boys have been totally soaked. So they have decided that it’s not the wisest idea to camp out tonight, instead they have booked into a hostel, so at least they will be dry and get a decent night’s sleep. The boys have had a very long day riding from 8:45 to 5:30 with very few breaks, and managed to cover a whopping 152 miles which is great as they are now safely at their destination for tonight which is Armadale. Tomorrow the boys are up early once again to get the ferry from Armadale to Mallaig at 10:15, they are hoping to be in Glencoe tomorrow night, so they are making good time.
Graham is very proud that on the windy roads, the C90′s were keeping up with the likes of BMW’s and Triumphs, which was caused great amusement amongst the boys due to the fact that these are HUGE bikes, and the Cubs are just on these little things.
So the boys are all safe and well, and the bikes are running tremendously.
Day 4 - Tuesday 22nd June 2010
Today the bikers travelled from Durness down to Ullapool. The weather was dry – makes a change from the awful weather the boys have been having, and there was only a wee shower later on in the evening. Today they had a wee stop off at Loch Inver which they said was beautiful and arrived at their destination of Ullapool at half three/four pm this afternoon.
They enjoyed the single track roads today, a 25 degree hill and some more steep hills and are still loving the scenery.
Upon arriving at Ullapool, the boys went in search of food as last night they decided to sit down and eat all their supplies – not a wise move, as Ullapool had no power so they couldn’t get any hot food, so the boys hopes of a nice cooked meal were dashed…and they had to settle for some supplies from Tesco.
The bikers are looking to travel down roughly 130 miles tomorrow, heading towards Armadale, where they have a ferry booked for 10am on Thursday morning to carry them on the next leg of the journey.
Day 3 - Monday 21st June 2010
Today the boys travelled from Thurso to Durness. The weather once again wasn’t spectacular, it started off wet but got drier as the day went on so the boys were able to relax at their campsite at Sango Sands in Durness. The boys are enjoying the scenery, taking in some great views. Graham has decided that Honda c90s really are the best touring bikes and they are going just fine!
The boys will be setting off towards Ullapool tomorrow. Best Wishes from all at the BBS.
Day 2 - Sunday 20th June 2010
The boys arrived at their destination of Thurso where the weather is not so lovely, it was very cold and very wet – not the greatest ingredients for a bike trip, however the boys are booked in to a local hostel so they are going to be all dry and warm tonight and rested, ready to continue their trip tomorrow where they are looking to head towards Durness.
The bikes are running extremely well and the boys are thoroughly enjoying themselves. It’s a hard trip for them their wee bikes but they are sturdy and so far have been very reliable so fingers crossed this continues throughout the trip.
The boys travelled up through John O’Groats, which was wet and cold – just miserable weather in general. The boys are proud to say they made it up the Berriedale Hill as they had been worried that the hills would be too steep for the wee bikes and they’d have to push but nope, they managed to power up the hill and onwards with their journey.
They rode for 5 hours today and at times their maximum speed was a great…18 miles per hour! But the strong headed wind wasn’t the greatest for riding in but the boys managed to make it to their destination anyway.
Day 1 - Saturday 19th June 2010
There was a strong turn-out of family, friends and some members of the local community to see off the four bikers…well…mopedders. The morning started with a BBQ, while the four Wildcubs mingled with family and friends and got ready for the trip. The local news was there along with a hoard of bikers to escort the boys off. At half ten the guys revved their 90 cc engines and zoomed…slowly…up the hill at Glen Moray and on their merry way north.
The boys arrived in Tain at about 5pm to set up their tents for the night. The cubs want to say a huge thank you to the Panther motorcycle club and the Classic motorcycle club who escorted them off on their journey and also treated them to lunch. Good Luck boys, we’ll all be down cheering you on for the last leg of the journey on Saturday, but until then there will be daily updates posted here on the progress of the trip.
