Exploring the barriers and enablers to accessible and inclusive dental care

back

The aim of this study is to improve dental care pathways for people with OI, by identifying barriers and enablers to people with OI accessing and receiving appropriate dental care.

The Brittle Bone Society (BBS) carried out a survey in 2023 looking at perceived dental care needs for individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, which highlighted the need to improve access to dental services and to find better ways to treat and prevent dental disease.  There is little, if any, dental research that addresses this.

The BBS are therefore delighted to be able to fund Researchers, Dr Niall McGoldrick and Dr Heather Cassie from the School of Dentistry at Dundee University to carry out this important project.  The researchers will work with people with lived experience of OI and with dentists to explore the barriers to accessing care and how best to improve it. They will bring together existing research in this area, to find out what can be learnt from other settings and identify what future research should focus on. Ultimately this research will improve dental care for people with OI by making it more accessible and inclusive.

This work will produce theory-informed, evidence- and experience-based recommendations for policymakers, healthcare providers and guidance development groups to consider when designing or reviewing services for people with OI.
